The deadly shock
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: April 03, 2014 -
Despite the full knowledge on the mortality of human life in this temporal world, the visitation of death in a family is something none of us would like to welcome.
If there is a possible route out, all of us would surely try to avoid the shadow of death falling on us.
This is simply because the irreparable loss of near and dear ones are too much to bear for the fragile hearts of those who are left behind.
When the adults, who could philosophise on the mystery of life in this temporal world to overcome the loss, are finding it so hard to reconcile to the fact of life, what about the young children whose beloved fathers or mothers were snatched away by the cruel hands of death so suddenly?
This is the thought that must have crossed the the minds of most people when they heard about the death of a 28-year-old man from electric shock in his own house at Andro Huikap Mayai Leikai when a High Tension power cable snapped and fell on the domestic line on March 31, while the whole State was celebrating Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba, the new year of the Meiteis.
Apart from his wife and other family members, the man left behind his two young begotten daughters and an uncertain future ahead of them.
On a day everyone was rejoicing over the arrival of a new year, there was gloom in the family. What a tragedy!!
From the report of the incident, it has emerged that the engineers and other officials working in the newly converted Power Corporation in the State need to do a lot of explanation over the unwelcome visitation of death in the family.
The man lost his life when he tried to put off the light on the main switch after noticing sudden increase in the voltage of the bulb in his room.
The sudden fluctuation in the voltage was due to snapping of a High Tension power cable which fell on the domestic power cable line, thus, leading to a sudden surge in the electric current.
In addition to claiming the life of a family man, at least 27 TV sets, 11 power inverters and eight refrigerators in several houses were also destroyed in the mishap.
Had the engineers sitting in the cosy chairs in the office of the newly converted State Power Corporation heeded to repeated appeals for repairing the power tripping coil at Kongba Power Sub-Station, which supplies electricity to the area, would the mishap have been occurred?
When crores of rupees have been spent on the construction of the power sub-station, how much would it cost for repairing the defective tripping coil, which could have automatically cut the power supply in case the High Tension wire accidentally came in contact with the domestic line?
And how come, the tripping coil in the newly constructed power sub-station has developed defects or the newly installed High Tension Power got snapped if the quality of the HT line or the tripping wire installed had not been compromised?
The State Government and more particularly the Chairman of the State Power Corporation should come out with answers to these questions, so as to regain the faith of the people to the Corporation, which, we believe, has been set up to enhance the efficiency in transmission and distribution of power and not to claim the lives of consumers from sheer negligence.
