THE FOUL TRUTH - AMAKPA ACHUMBA : Priyakanta Laishram Captures And Taps Into The Evil Truth Of The Society
Priyakanta Laishram's "The Foul Truth - Amakpa Achumba" is every bit a game changer. After ages, a Manipuri film that captures and taps into the evil truth of the society. I am left both inspired and infuriated after the movie. The Foul Truth is a human story and one of those rare jewels that stays back with you even after the movie ends.
The film charts the story of a teenage boy - Thoithoiba, who is a survivor of male rape/male sexual assault/child abuse and deals with the social stigma and discrimination attached to male sexual assault. It gives us the insight of what's going on inside a victim's mind, their suffering, their turmoil, their loneliness, their sadness and their anger.
Did you know? In India, the rate of male sexual assault is 54% (Only Reported Cases) while it is 51% for females. 8 men are sexually assaulted every hour. These are the facts!
With THE FOUL TRUTH - AMAKPA ACHUMBA, Priyakanta Laishram makes you take a closer look at reality. He manages to deep dive into the main plot and gives us many moments where you just want to go in and help the protagonist.
Gruesome, gritty and atmospheric, his unnerving execution almost suffocates you. It is a very sad and jarring film about some of the most atrocious behaviour of human kind. But we can't deny the fact that this film definitely has an honest voice and opinion.
Picking up a topic that is considered too big a taboo to talk about in today's world is brave. It takes a HERO to make a film on this issue.
The Foul Truth - Amakpa Achumba is soulful, riveting and emotional. The film stands out from the rest with a non-dramatised version of reality. Priyakanta Laishram gives solid performance as Thoithoiba and brilliantly brings out the nuances to deliver a compelling act. He succeeds in leading his stamp all over the film. The supporting cast also does a good job in yet short and pivotal roles.
Overall, an excellent cinema with top-notch direction, dialogues, performances and sound design.
Take a bow!
