The Dead Mother
- Part 5 -

By Dr. Konsam Suken Singh *

Now, without a single light on, the happy home stands still in the silence of the cold winter midnight and on the empty cloud-free sky, the moon is shining to its brightest pride ever. Inside the home, the three happy members of the family are in their deepest sleep ever far away from the chilly cold of December under their warm blankets.

It is just about 30 minutes later since the wall clock in the living room struck 1AM. Ton is in his deepest ever sleep in the silent darkness of his bedroom beside his better half (wife)...but still can afford to have a DREAM OF REALITY.....

".........The seemingly ever brightest full moon night (which was there just few hours back when they were sitting under the NOBAB tree) is suddenly covered by the rippling silvery lines of dark clouds from all directions and the whole bright horizons now turns out to be 'dark shadows of fear'. From somewhere amongst the dark shadows of fear...gradually appears some BRIGHT RAYS...as if sprinkled by some unseen angels of God. Ton is astounded to see all these sudden strange happenings in front of his eyes. Before he can realize himself what is going on,..slowly the Bright Rays turns out to be a form of a Mortal Female Being who is cladded totally in extreme Whites (Pungou Phanek and Enuffi ) with her black long uncombed hairs lingering away from her beautiful head in different directions being blown off by the heavy winds around. The Mortal Female Being seems to be quite familiar to Ton but he can't get who exactly she is as she appears only to be a faded shadow. Ton's apprehension is increased till he whispers to himself which gets slipped from his tongue....

Ton - " Who is that !!....Oh...Mom..!!! " He then continues to her in a very soft voice,

Ton – " What happens to you, mom...why you appear to me like that !! "

The Female Being (Mom) replies in a sad voice with a 'leaving face' – "Son,..I love you ..."

With these very words, few drops of tear (of departure) roll down from her eyes. Then she continues with a stronger but the same sad voice,

" ...But you know, I have to leave you now. Believe me or not,...I was made to leave you long time back and I left you already. You remember that day when you came back home running from your office to make sure that I didn't fell down in the bathroom and nothing untoward happened to me. Yes,..your dream in the previous night was not A TRUE DREAM but A DREAM TRUE ....because soon after you left home for your work, as usual I went inside the bathroom before my lunch to take bath with the warm water which you warmed up with the emersion rod heater as everyday and suddenly I got slipped down and collapsed on the bathroom floor with no one to hear my help-cry and I woke up only to realize that I was in a different world, a world of angels around me. Then only I realized myself that I was DEAD.

But, you know, how much I love you and without my last wish (of seeing you getting settled with a wife) getting fulfilled and my last promise to your dad getting fulfilled, I simply couldn't leave this mortal world even though I was dead. So, even though my Soul already left my lifeless body, I couldn't leave you all alone just like that (as you told just now, ..'You know you can't simply leave me just like that') and ( to my utmost request to the Saviour) I was allowed to take the Mortal form of your mom and continue to take care of you till my LAST WISH is fulfilled. So, it has been my Immortal Spirit in the form of me who has been with you these days since that day.

Now that it has already been a month since you get settled with my dear daughter-in-law, so I have to leave my MORTAL FORM now. You must be wondering why I choose today itself. I know, you love full moon night since your childhood. I still remember how you used to play in the full moon nights till late hours along with your daddy when you were small. So, I have been looking for such a brightest full moon night for the day to leave you and the Saviour has made today 'the day'. I love you son.

You again remember that big drop of water that fell down on your head when we were sitting under the NOBAB tree just few hours back!!!!!. That drop of water was not a dew drop as you thought son, but your Father had poured His Blessings on you in the form of a drop of a tear as he cried because he knew that you would be all alone from today for the first time (since he left you to me) without me beside you however weak and old I were . Now that I have no more wish (s) nor any unfulfilled dream (s )as was promised to your father when he left you to me, so son, let your mom leave you,..you bid me good bye (as I told to you that time when we bid good night ) happily so that I can leave you happily and take rest in PEACE along with your father up in the HEAVEN. Please take this last GIFT of mine to you,..a BIG DROP OF TEAR FROM MY LEFT EYE to which you often put eye drops whenever I complained of watery eyes. This DROP OF TEAR is my last GIFT OF LOVE to you son. Bye son,..your mom always loves you !! "

With these words, the MORTAL SHADOW of LIGHT gradually fades away and disappears in no time.

Authors' Note:
" We often come across and read about many 'science fictions' which blends science with human beings and thereby reproducing an imaginable possibility to the human lives. This short story is not a science fiction in its real sense but a sort of something in that line - a 'spiritual fiction', which connects the Spirits of our Souls and our human lives. It is just an imaginary theme from the thoughts of the writer, nothing more than that."
