Two Ministers we salute |

As we understand it, the Public Works Department and the Food and Civil Supply Department are two of the most troublesome departments for reasons that are obvious. Corruption, incompetence, the unholy nexus between Ministers, officials and contractors and suppliers have been the bane of these two Departments for ages and it is only right that these two portfolios be handed over to no-nonsense political leaders, who can make a difference, however little it may be. Ever since Erabot was given the high profile and controversy filled FCS Department, we have seen the MLA from Wangkhei Assembly Constituency cracking the whip and making its officials fall in line and make sure that kerosene oil and AAY and BPL rice actually reach the common people. In fact in many localities, it was for the first time in many, many years that kerosene oil and AAY and BPL rice were sold at the subsidised rate as announced by the Government.
It is also after a very long, long time that we are today seeing a Works Minister personally inspecting the construction works being taken up all over the State and the manner in which Ranjit cracked the whip against the tardy work at Chandel and along the IT road is encouraging to say the least. Nothing is going right in Manipur. From the Public Distribution System, to civic amenities, to health care, to roads and bridges and law and order, everything is going backward and in such a situation, what we need is a tough Government, which is ready to take tough decisions which will prove fruitful in the long term. We do not need populist measures and the Ministers and political leaders must keep in mind that they are there not to please anyone but to ensure that there is governance. With a Chief Minister whose report card is nothing to write home about, we need capable Ministers who will be willing to stick their neck out and put things right on track. We do understand that there are external forces and power players, which make smooth governance difficult, but this is the challenge and as men who are there to frame the policies of the land and chart out the future for the State, we need tough Ministers who will not take official apathy lying down. In short we need a zero level tolerance policy towards inefficiency and official lethargy compounded by corruption. For the moment we hope that Y Erabot and K Ranjit continue the good show and we hope their good start does not end in a whimper for that will be like a bucket of cold water after a hot shower. |
