Strikes cripple life in Manipur
Iboyaima Laithangbam | The Hindu | IMPHAL, July 26, 2014 15:37 IST
Manipur is under siege as a result of the two general strikes imposed by the United Naga Council and the Joint Committee. While the UNC is demanding withdrawal of State forces from Ukhrul district and lifting of the prohibitory orders imposed there, the Joint Committee's strike is over the Inner Line Permit System.
On Saturday all government offices wore a deserted look. There was no bus service both in and out of the State. Besides, employees could not use cars or two wheelers to come to work. All educational institutes had been closed down till Monday as a precautionary measure. All shops and commercial establishments were closed down. However there was some scuffle in Imphal town when police tried to disperse vendors and fired tear gas. Reports of such agitations are also reported from Thoubal and Bishnupur districts. The five hill districts are not affected so far by the campaign for the Inner Line Permit.
