Relief work in flood affected areas on 14 June 2018

All units of Assam Rifles of IGAR (South) employed in carrying out flood relief work have stepped up their effort in conjunction with the civil administration and Police. Brig Amit Kabthiyal, SM, Commander 9 Sector Assam Rifles visited the flood affected areas of Irong, Maibam, Uchiwa, Arapat, Kiyamgei, Achanbigai and Mongjam of Thoubal, Imphal East and Imphal West Districts to take stock of the situation and relief operation in progress.

The Sector Commander also interacted with locals and assured them of maximum possible assistance from Assam Rifles. Troops of Tulihal Battalion of 9 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (South) carried out rescue and relief operations in the areas of Irong, Maibam and Uchiwa.

A total of 220 marooned persons have been successfully evacuated so far. The troops also provided tentage, emergency rations and drinking water to the displaced population and assisted villagers in the repair work of the breached portion of the embankment with sand bags at Irong.

The unit medical team also visited the flood affected areas and addressed the villagers regarding hygiene issues and prevention of common water borne diseases. The medical team visited various relief camps, schools and houses where people have taken shelter and attended to the needy and provided medicines to about 750 locals.

Water purification kits were also distributed. DC Thoubal also visited the flood affected areas and appreciated the efforts of the unit and its medical team. In Arapati and Kiyamgei in general area to the East of Lilong, troops of Keithelmanbi Battalion assisted in relief and rescue operations and rescued approximately 200 stranded locals using motorised boats.

Relief material including rations, tentage, tarpaulin and approximately 1000 sandbags were also provided. Mantripukhri Battalion set up two temporary camps in the areas of Achanbigai and Mongjam in the general area to the East of Koirengei and provided rations, tentage and other relief material to the needy.

Locals at all locations expressed their gratitude to Assam Rifles for the timely assistance rendered and efforts for rescuing the marooned people.
