Burmese Democratic Forces call to stop civil war and release the political prisoners in Burma during Burma’s Parliamentary Delegation’s visit to India.
India-based exile Burmese democratic forces will stage a demonstration calling the Government of India and Burma’s Parliamentary Delegation in Delhi to take action on serious human issues in Burma such as immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners; declaration of a nationwide ceasefire with ethnic armed groups and cease attacks on ethnic communities; and amendments of 2008 Constitution.
The Burma’s Parliamentary delegation led by Thura U. Shwe Mann, Speaker of the Lower House of the Myanmar Parliament is on a week-long visit to India.
Dr. Tint Swe, elected Burmese MP in 1990 and Chairman of Burma Centre Delhi said “It is thus crucial that Indian leaders take the opportunity to raise human rights issues during Burma’s Parliamentary delegation visit to India.”
“Despite the recent reforms at Naypyidaw, more than 1600 political prisoners are still in Burma’s jails, arbitrary attack, arrest, detention, extrajudicial killings, sexual violence, internal displacement and forced labour against civilian populations continue especially in Kachin, Karen and Shan states of Eastern Burma” Dr. Tint Swe added.”
While the recent reforms including convention of new Parliament, amendments of Political Party Registration and Election Laws, relaxation of media restrictions and the passage of a bill permitting peaceful protests are being initiated by Thein Sein’s new government, crimes against humanity are also being committed in ethnic areas. As impunity remains rampant, it is apparent that the regime has not truly changed its approach to its population.
We request you to kindly send a reporter/photographer to cover the event in your esteem newspaper/magazine/journal/TV/website in support of restoration of peace, justice, human rights and democracy in Burma and in the region.
