Protest (At Delhi) against Brutal Crackdown on Peaceful Protesters in Burma
New Delhi, 30th November 2012
Dear friends and supporters,
We, the Burmese pro-democracy forces in India is staging a peaceful
protest demonstration to condemn the brutal crackdown of peaceful
protesters who have been demanding for suspension of the Letpadaung
copper mine near Monywa, Sagaing Region in Burma.
Since August 2012 hundreds of local farmers, human rights activists
and Buddhists monks have been protesting against the copper mine and
its negative impact for the people. In the early morning of 29
November, police fired the camps of protestors with water and tear gas
near the Letpadaung mine. The fires tore through the camps, burning
dozens of protestors, monks and laypeople, most of whom are now
seeking medical attention in makeshift hospitals. Even earlier this
week before this 29 brutal crackdown, six key organizers in Rangoon
were also arrested for supporting the protest.
The Letpadaung Copper Mine Project is a joint venture of China’s Wan
Bao Company and the Burmese military-owned Union of Myanmar Economic
Holdings Ltd. It has resulted in land confiscations, environmental
degradation as well violating the rights of the peaceful protestors.
In view of this brutal crackdown, the Burmese pro-democracy forces in
India are organizing a peaceful protest demonstration with a demand to
the Burmese Government:
o To conduct an independent investigation with international experts into the crackdown on 29 November and provide justice for the victims;
o Immediate suspension of the Letpadaung copper mine and
o Immediate release of all those who have been arrested in connection with the protests.
In support of Burmese people’s movement for peace and human rights in
Burma, we request you to kindly send your news reporter and
photographers to cover the event.
A memorandum to Burmese President Thein Sein and Chinese President Hu Jintao will be submitted through the respective Embassies in New Delhi.
Date: 1st December 2012 (Saturday)
