- Economic liberalization in India was initiated in 1991 under the Prime Minister ship of P.V. Narasimha Rao. India was under the balance of payment crisis on account which India had to accept structural adjust ment programme formulated by international Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank (International Bank for Reconstruction and Development) to reinforce privatization and opening up of her economy.
