'Northeast Region in the Context of Indian Nationhood' seminar at Delhi University on 5th & 6th Dec 2014
In a room fully pack in the Arts Faculty, Delhi University was a discourse on Northeast Region in the Context of Indian Nationhood. The two day seminar, first of its kind at national level was organised by Tangkhul Scholars’ Association (TSA) sponsored by Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) on 5th & 6th –Dec-2014.
Eminent Scholars, politicians, bureaucrats, Lawyers/Advocates, research scholars, activist, and many more were part of the seminar. The welcome and introductory message was given by Dr. Yaruimnagm Awungsh, the President of TSA which was followed by key note address of Prof. R.K. Barik (Indian Institute of Public Administration) painting an optimistic view and the growth of rich cultural heritage through isolation contesting the idea of northeast underdevelopment.
Other prominent speakers included Prof. Tiplut Nongbri from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Dr. M. Amarjeet Singh from Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research, Jamia Millia Islamia, Kumar Sanjay Singh from Delhi University (DU), Dr. A.Bimol Akoijam from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Dr. R. Vashum from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Dr. Walunir Tzudir of Amity University, Dr. Topi Basar, Law Faculty, Delhi University (DU) among many others along with paper presentation from scholars of all over India working on Northeast region.
The seminar covered issues such as insurgencies problems, political discourse, development issues, scientific pursuit of knowledge, migration of Northeast to major cities, constitutional and legal provision, the most controversial ASPA, etc.
Prof. Tiplut Nongbri, pointed the development deficit of the region, where she deeply decreed the participation of the seven sisters as a stake holder in political and development processes decrying the New Delhi top-down approach to the problems of the region, and under representation in policy-making and formulation in New Delhi concerning to Northeast region. The question, many speakers delineated was how to become modern, scientific-minded people without losing the identity of the Northeast on Indian nationhood.
With an assurance of publishing the seminar proceedings and widest circulation possible, Dr. Rimai Joy, Convener of the seminar ended with a vote of thanks for all intellectual lectures, presentation, and panel discussion as every lecture was truly an enlightenment and a new orientattion towards northeast region in the context of Indian nationhood.
