The recent Meet of the Concerned Naga Senior Citizens at Dimapur said the integration of contiguous Naga inhabited areas would be part of the overall final political settlement and no "final political settlement should be signed without including all the Naga areas in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Manipur".
In a statement issued by Convener and Seasonal Secretary of the Meet Rev Dr VK Nuh and Nikem Iralu respectively said the settlement should be simultaneous and comprehensive and further cautioned that "no piecemeal deal should be accepted". The Naga Senior Citizens' Meet also impressed upon all section of Nagas to give proper weightage and render "unstinted history as it stands as the basis for all Naga movements". The Meet also categorically rejected the controversial booklet "The Bedrock of Naga Society" published by the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (I), describing the "booklet is distortion of historical facts".
The statement further said the concerned senior citizens felt that it was their obligation to express their collective opinion on various issues that were crucial for the Naga people and their future destiny. On the issue of reconciliation and unity, the Meeting was of the opinion that all Naga underground factions particularly the NSCN (IM) and the NSCN (K) must stop killing amongst themselves to "create congenial atmosphere" to the peace process. It strongly asserted that the "process of elimination of the rival group" was a "stumbling block" to Naga unity and reconciliation, which nullified all efforts at achieving settlement.
"Without the spirit of openness, magnanimity and forgiveness, peace process and unity may prove illusive and futile", the statement further added. It also stated the proposal of all factional representatives meeting sponsored by Naga Hoho and church on August 9 was taken as "a right direction in this juncture". "Therefore this meeting urges upon the Government of India, Government of Nagaland, security forces and all intelligence agencies and the press agencies to honor such a maiden venture and extend full co-operation", it added.
The concerned senior citizens also strongly urged upon the Government of India to lift all the "black laws" which had been imposed on the Nagas in order to pave the way for "uninterrupted peace process" between the Government of India and the Nagas. The meeting also expressed serious concern over the likely outcome the coming general election in the State which was going to take place at the end of a period of 5 years of governance which was the fruit of an "abnormal election in which the will of the people was not expressed properly".
"Already reports of manipulation of the village communities to declare total support of the incumbent MLAs have started to come in", the meeting disclosed and further appealed to Naga Hoho and churches of Nagaland to do something urgent to stop this dangerous trend so as to ensure free and fair election. The Concerned Naga Senior Citizens' meet was attended by altogether 22 persons comprising former Chief Ministers, Ministers, retired civil servants and church leaders.
