Need to be wary of trouble makers : Nip the trouble in the bud
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: April 12 2016 -
The report is still very hazy, at least till the time this commentary is being written.
No statistics yet on the number of injured, no figure on how many houses have actually been destroyed or attacked, no report on how the trouble erupted.
Again more than likely that there will be no clear report on how the trouble started for there will be contradictory inputs on how it all started, each having their own version to trot out.
But it should be clear that this is a reflection of the deep rooted misunderstanding between different communities and there is nothing to harp over this.
A shame it should be for all.
Again there are conflicting reports on the genesis of the the issue at hand and while the death of two youngsters is unfortunate by any stretch of the imagination, what is a cause of concern is the communal tinge given to the death of the two youths.
The trouble that erupted at Mayang Imphal is a culmination of the deep rooted sense of distrust between different communities and it is here that everyone need to be wary of rumour mongers.
Those who saw the communal riots that engulfed the valley of Manipur in 1993, will remember how rumours only added fuel to the fire and led to senseless killings and destruction.
No one in his right mind will want a repeat of what happened more than 20 years back.
Manipur has seen more than its share of ethnic conflagrations and communal distrusts and given the highly charged atmosphere there is all the more need for the people to be on guard against trouble makers.
Mind you these trouble makers can come in different forms and they can be devilishly ‘productive’ cooking up fantastic tales that do nothing except add fuel to the volatile situation.
What is happening at Mayang Imphal may not go the way of the earlier ugly incidents but this should not be the reason to take things easy.
Not looking at the worst but if enough care is not taken, then the possibility of the uproar at Mayang Imphal spreading to other parts of the State cannot be written off that easily.
There will always be trouble makers and it is only right that care is taken to ensure that no space is created for these trouble makers to come to the fore.
The State Government too should respond to the situation with the urgency that is needed. Manipur certainly cannot afford to have history repeating itself.
