Kohima Jan 20 (NEPS): The growing importance of mass media in the North Eastern region and cost factor involved in pursuing
higher studies in electronic and print media by going outside the region, the Nagaland University under the initiatives of
its Vice Chancellor, Prof GD Sharma, has decided to launch a regular "course" in journalism---both electronic and print---soon
in Kohima.
Speaking to NEPS here today, the Vice Chancellor stated this "Journalism course" under Nagaland University would be launched
in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), New Delhi.
"This will be the first collaboration program on journalism—both electronic and print---in the country initiated by our
University," Prof Sharma said adding it would help to providing "quality training" in journalism not only for the people of
Nagaland but also the entire north eastern India.
Expressing his happiness on coming into reality of the new program now in the University, Prof Sharma said they had initiated
the program one and half years back after he took over the Vice Chancellorship of the Nagaland University.
He said the University would start the courses (electronic and print journalism) from the academic session of 2004-05 and
further disclosed that he was trying to bring the Union Minister of Information and Technology here for the formal launching
of the session in February.
The Vice Chancellor also expressed that the University was charging only half of the normal fees charged by the IIMC. The idea
of charging such a nominal fee from the students was to help them to take the opportunities to complete their desired goals,
the Vice Chancellor pointed out.
The faculty of IIMC will come and impart trainings to the students in addition to Nagaland University’s visiting faculty.
Professionals from the media side would also be invited to give lectures in journalism during the training sessions time to time,
Prof Sharma stated.
The Nagaland University had also asked the IIMC to provide all the necessary equipments like books, visual texts, CDs, etc with
regard to the courses, besides the University is trying to establish links with the Asian and European Institutes for exchange
of students and teachers in media and other subjects, the Vice Chancellor said.
Although he was extremely grateful to Indian Prime Minister for giving Rs 35 crore for Nagaland University and another Rs 10 crore
for Kohima campus only, Prof Sharma disclosed they had already submitted Rs 128 crore and it was under 10th Plan for the
infrastructures of the Nagaland University. He also said the University had selected some central agencies for the construction of
the of the University infrastructures.
