The Naga Students’ Federation(NSF) has
taken an exception to the allegation that appeared in
a certain daily under the caption "HRD(Human Recourse
Development) rejects Prof. Sharma's resignation",
wherein in has mentioned that "Prof. Sharma was forced
to send a reminder on June 3 last by a delegation of
University Teachers(NUTA) and president NSF".
In a statement, NSF General Secretary Vivi Nyuthe said
Prof Sharma had admitted that "he respects the
sentiments of the people and at the same time honor
his relinquishment on June 3, 2002".
The student leader pointed out that students had so
far registered its grievances democratically in the
appointment of Prof Sharma as Vice Chancellor,
Nagaland University for which the question of "law and
order problem did not arise.
She (Vivi Nyuthe) further termed as a "great insult"
the complete ignorance by the MHRD to the plight of
the people, instead of trying to have understanding
the grievances of the aggrieved people.
The student body regretted that despite that fact that
MHRD had been directed by the office of the President
of India, who is also the Visitor of NU to review the
matter in regard to the appointment, "the MHRD failed
to initiate the process in time, thereby the students
and people were denied of justice".
Terming as "unfortunate" the step motherly treatment
meted out to the people of the region and whose voices
belittled, Nyuthe however expressed hope that Rector
of the Nagaland University would continue to initiate
in solving the matter at the earliest.
Meanwhile Nagaland University Teachers’
Association(NUTA) has charged the Intelligence Bureau
(IB), based in Kohima, of having taken partisan stand
on the Nagaland University Vice Chancellor crisis by
sending a wrong report that only a delegation of NUTA
and the president of the NSF ‘coerced’ Prof Sharma
into submitting his resignation on June 3 last.
The Association said the claim made by the Ministry of
Human Recourse Development that "about 300 students
body NSF and PGSU threatened the Vice Chancellor" on
August 8, 2001 was misleading because only a joint
delegation of 11 students entered the heavily guarded
VIP Guest House and met Prof Sharma, which led to the
submission of his resignation. And hence "the question
of coercion does not arise".
It said when there had been no report of law and order
problem in Nagaland University from the State’s Civil
administration side, it was disappointing to note that
MHRD had assumed that there was a serious "law and
order problem in the campus of Nagaland University".
The NUTA rued over the claim of the State Government
that it did not have any hand in the functioning of
the Central University, whereas, the two letters of
the MHRD had been addressed to the State Chief
Secretary, Pandey, which, it explained, was a clear
indication of the role played by the State Government
in the Vice Chancellor issue.
It was surprising that the latest letter of the MHRD
was not addressed to the State Governor who was the
Rector of the University or to the Registrar of the
University who as the administrative head of the
University had been repeatedly writing to the MHRD for
directives to resolve the crisis, NUTA stated.
The Association also stated that the teachers and
student community had registered their protest with
deep concern for the development and progress of the
nascent University, adding as a part of the
intellectual community it was their bounden duty to
highlight the injustice and discrimination meted out
to the Nagaland University by the MHRD.
