The influential North East Students Organisation (NESO) today criticised the government and the national media for its alleged ''failure'' to highlight the decade-long fast by Irom Sharmilla of Manipur for repeal of the AFSPA
"Neither the government of India, national leaders, bureaucrats, Gandhians, intellectuals nor the national media have given any attention to Sharmilla''s cause for repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). It is disrespect to a democratic movement", Bhattacharya asserted.
"We warn the Centre that do not treat the northeast people as second class citizens. The NE people will stand unitedly for repeal of the Act", said NESO secretary general and All Arunachal Pradesh students Union president Gumjum Haider.
"We are one with iron lady Sharmilla and on Monday as part of our solidarity movement there will be candle light processions across the northeast region", Bhattacharya added.
