NEFIS activists arrested 87 days after the framing of FIR
New Delhi , June 27 2013
North-East Forum for International Solidarity had been running a campaign against the compulsory imposition of Hindi in Delhi University, on the students from the ‘North-East’. A large number of students held several protest demonstration both at Delhi University and outside the ministry of HRD.
After the protests, both the University of Delhi and the HRD ministry had assured that the clause of compulsory imposition of Hindi would be removed. The protests had been peaceful and democratic in its tenor.
But today, on 27.6.2013 three activists of NEFIS were picked up by the police on the basis of an FIR framed on 1.4.2013 and slapped with non-bail able sections.
The police have acted, in what we consider, extremely vindictive and conspiratorial manner, sensing that if they had arrested these activists while the campaign was on, there would surely have been strident protests from the students.
They deliberately waited till the summer vacations, when most of the students have gone back home, to make the arrests, so that protests do not happen.
We unequivocally condemn this atrocious act. NEFIS calls upon all the people of the North-East to rally around the arrested activists and intensify their struggle against the Indian state for their democratic rights.
