Love through SMS |

Marriages are made in heavens. This adage has been as old as the vedic age. Now the small screen on mobile handset, the SMS has launched a thousand relationship across the length and breadth of our society. This techno-cupid has made life easier for love lorn Romeos to express their hearts to their Juliets. It is a modern 'Kabutar' used for conveying intimate love among the teenage boys and girls. This glittering small gadget has become the best device of communication. Through this the rules of courtship have changed and girls can easily shred their coyness. In support of the statements above, there is a real life example which happened in the life of a man recently. A friend of mine has been in a upbeat mood and he is in heaven since the beginning of this month. He is in his late thirties and just stepping into forties. In fact, he is six or seven years junior to me but we are close friends as intimate as intimate friends ought to be. We are friends because our taste in life are the same. Above this, we are the birds of the same feather taking the profession of teaching working in the same school. The only difference between him and I is that he is still bachelor while I am a father of two. Life began to look up for him by one incident and that incident started a period of rejoice from him lasting weeks. An unexpected SMS message from a girl studying Post Graduate Degree in Delhi has entirely changed his course of life and hope. The SMS read 'I lve U, I wnt U, I m coming 2 U'. Actually, the girl was once a student in his coaching centre some seven or eight years back when he was a home tutor. Now he is a lecturer in a Govt Secondary School well settled financially but unsettled in love. He is looking for a life partner but shy to act as a teenager running after the girls and at the same time does not favour arranged marriage as proposed by his parents. The thought of celibacy often comes in his mind before he received the SMS message. During the days while he was the teacher and the girl a student, nothing had happened, nothing went beyond the good relationship of a teacher and a learner. But in those days also both their eyes had told something for the undisclosed love hidden in both the minds. Now after seven years when the memories of her is about to lose from my friend totally, the girl proposed her through mobile phone. whether, it may be a joke or a time pass on the part of the sender but to my friend he is very serious this time because in his words he says that he has read the inner core of the girl's heart in the message and it will definitely be true. His ecstasy knows no bound these days. Let me put aside for a while the sudden exploration of hidden love for my friend and come to the importance and use of this little wonder, this gadget called mobile phone and its SMS system. After personal computer, the mobile phone is the next great invention in the last part of the 20th century. It has changed the way of life with its multi-media capability. This revolution in IT though late has arrived in our State also and it has changed the way people talk to one another. It is estimated that Manipur has about 50,000 mobile users at present having the connectivity with BSNL, Aircell, Airtel etc with BSNL leading the race. The number of mobile users are growing expo-nentially and the demand is more from the younger generations and it will be a matter of interest to take a closer look at this phenomenon of mobile phone and SMS with a special focus on how it is increasingly used for romance, dating and gossiping. The most common form of expression is in the form of handwritten letter. It is natural for many to write what they are hesitant to say. But now letters are taken outdated and this technology - the SMS - enable many to say whatever they want in just a moment. Youngsters use SMS as a tool for communication among themselves as their parents used love letters in their days. The advantages they have got is it is hidden from prying eyes and it is so private that it is just between the two, the sender and the receiver. The mobile phone and this SMS service are the latest trend in fashion. Young boys riding the bikes with one hand on the handle and the other with the mobile phone in the ear has become a common sight. The evidence is all around us, everywhere at parties, in social functions, in conferences, in clubs and restaurants, on the streets and even in religious functions it is impossible to avoid the buzzing and clicking as users access their mobile and SMS. This new electronic lexicon of communication called SMS in here to stay. We can not avoid it at all. It is a boon for my friend who has got long lost love through SMS. But at the same time, it may be a curse for those who don't want 'dirty jokes' displayed on their mobile screen from unknown senders. All is beneficial if it is used with that necessity for which it is invented. Oinam Anand wrote this article for The Sangai Express This article was webcasted on July 05th, 2006 |
