Loktak Fishermen to attend Wetland Conservation Seminar at Alappuzha, Kerala

A nine-member delegation from Manipur led by Mr. Oinam Rajen, Secretary, Loktak Lake Area Fishermen’s Union Manipur will be attending the National Ramsar sites Stakeholders
Meet and Wetland Conservation Seminar at Alappuzha, Kerala - the home to Vembanad Kol wetlands, one of the most beautiful Ramsar sites in India- on March 3rd to 5th
2013. The national meeting is hosted by Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) and sponsored by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests,
(Government of India), which is the national nodal government organisation for the Ramsar Convention.
The main objective of this program is to bring the stakeholders, policy makers, researchers and civil society organizations of the all Ramsar sites in India to a common platform. This conference aims to showcase the conservation methods and efforts in the Ramsar sites so that good models can be replicated. The focus of this meeting is the primary stakeholders, the people who are dependent on the wetlands for their livelihood.
The programs include a conservation seminar, interaction meet among stakeholders, photo competition and exhibition, exhibition of stakeholders including their products and traditions. The event is first of its kind in India.
The Manipur delegation will use this platform to bring national and international attention to the historical, cultural, economic and ecological value of the Loktak and related wetlands of the Manipur Valley. Critical issues, problems, challenges and obstacles concerning the survival of the “Mirror of Manipur” will also be shared by the delegation.
