Licypriya Kangujam with Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Shri Kailash Satyarthi
Licypriya, a 7 years-old Indian schoolgirl who is currently making a global wave is now ready to starts the first climate change movement in the African country of Angola.
She said, “When I search in google about the climate change movement or any name of young climate activist in Angola, I couldn’t find even a single news, any names or concerns by anyone on this biggest global issue in this African country. I will go there and will starts a new movement of climate action with the school children.”
“I will also plants hundreds of trees with the people of Angola during my 8 days visits. Planting trees will be the ultimate solution to fight the climate change”, she added.
It can be noted that Angola is contributing 3.09% of the Green House Gas emissions growth in global index and also already loss over 50% of its forest land and now remaining only 46.40% due to huge population growth. climate change in Angola will potentially impact four key sectors in the country: water resources, agriculture, fisheries, and human health.
Climate variability and change are likely to exacerbate many ongoing challenges as Angola continues to recover from nearly three decades of civil war. Extreme rainfall events and temperature changes are expanding the range and transmission period for disease vectors.
Sea level rise is placing coastal populations (approximately 50 percent of the total population) and infrastructure at risk of inundation and storm surge. Warming oceans combined with overfishing will continue to stress marine resources and threaten coastal livelihoods.
Already food insecure, Angola’s dependence on food imports and small-scale subsistence farming leave it particularly vulnerable to increased temperatures and rainfall variability which can impact crop yields, reduce livestock productivity, and expand the range of agricultural pests.
Licypriya will be traveling to Luanda, the capital City of Angola from 16 to 22 September to attend the UNESCO Partner’s Forum hosting by Government of Angola with UNESCO Headquarter & African Union.
