Prestigious “Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Children Award 2019” was given to Ms. Licypriya Kangujam, a 7-years-old child climate activist from Manipur on 27th July 2019 with the occasion of the 4th Death Anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Former President & Missile Man of India in recognition of her courage to fight to pass the climate change law in the country. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 3, 00,000 with a citation and a memento encrypted with the face of the Former President.

The award was handed over to her by the Founder of Khwaab Foundation, Shri Munna Kumar, a renowned social activist of the country from Bihar who is the donor of the prize along with Prof. Dr. Archana Bhattacharjee, a well known academician from Assam in a glittering ceremony.

In her speech after receiving the award, little climate activist Ms. Licypriya said, “It’s an honour for me that the organizer giving me this award in the name of our inspiration Dr Kalam to a small girl like me. It will give more inspiration and encouragement to all the children fighting for the climate change in all over the world. I would like to dedicate this award to them, to my country and my Sanaliebak Manipur. I will donate this money to construct a sustainable model school in a poor tribal region of North-East India.”

She also further added that, “Air Pollution & Climate Change are intricately linked, affecting large populations & children being the most vulnerable. We need urgent action.”

It can be noted that Licypriya is famous for her act of courage in such a young age as a symbol of bravery and inspirations to millions of children across the globe. On 29th June 2019, Group of young leaders from over 60 countries protest in front of the United Nations Headquarter, New York in support of her cause. More than 80 countries have extended online support to her so far in fighting against the climate change in the just 11 days with #IStandWithLicypriya of her first protest in front of the Parliament House of India on 21st June 2019. She continues her child movement every week in various places of India and the World with large number of her supporters specially children and young people.

Licypriya Kangujam (born on 2 October 2011) is an Indian schoolgirl, who at age 7, began rising her voice about the need for immediate action to combat climate change and disaster risks reduction and has since become an outspoken climate activist. She is known for having initiated ‘The Child Movement’ to protect the planet earth by tackling climate change and natural disasters that formed in June 2018 and surged globally after the United Nations Global Platform for Disaster Risks Reduction 2019 (GPDRR2019) in May 2019.

Her personal activism began in June 2018, when her activism “The Child Movement” raising her voice in New Delhi to enact a Climate Change laws began attracting several media coverage. She stood alone in front of the Indian Parliament House on 21st June 2019 drawing the attention of Hon’ble Prime Minister Mr. Modi and MPs to pass the Climate Change Law which become a global attention currently.

Even though India has not yet enacted any climate change laws. Her only message to the World is to protect the environment and save their future. She had invited in several national & international events and visited a total of 16 countries so far as a part of her movement.

As an impact, for the first time in the ongoing parliament session, on 27th June 2019 in Rajya Sabha (Upper House) of the parliament, 7 MPs brought up the issue of “Act on Climate Change” drawing the attention of the Hon’ble Environment Minister Mr. Prakash Javadekar as a Calling Attention Motion. Her brave news give a new hope to the hundreds of global environmentalists and climate activists of the World drawing the global attention to pass a climate change law in India to save the future.

On 21st October, She will lead “The Great October March“ where over one million school children and youth will walk with her from India Gate to Parliament House to ‘save our environment and save our future’. And also at the same time, to enact the Climate Change Law in India. The Great October March was previously planned to happen only in India Gate, New Delhi but it will be happen in all states of India and various countries of the World due to global pressure. She said, “I never thought my voice will become a global movement.”

She received supports from various Nobel Laureates of the World, celebrities, public figures and various international organizations and agencies. She was recently given the title “Climate Warrior of the East” by His Excellency Mr. George Mkondiwa, High Commissioner of Malawi to India on 26th July during the 1st International Youth Conclave 2019.
