Former Nagaland Power Minister K
Therie said Chief Minister SC Jamir was the "main
obstacle" in the Naga peace process because he (Jamir)
had been saying that Nagas had no right to demand
their sovereignty.
The former Minister, who was recently sacked by Jamir
from the Council of Ministers, said here on Money that
the Chief Minister had projected to the world and
India that "Naga underground leaders are struggling
without legacy and rights.
Therie said the controversial booklet "Bed Rock of
Naga Society" which distorted the Naga history was
authored by Jamir without the sanction of the Nagaland
Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) and Congress
Government in the State. Yet he (Jamir) had published
it in the name of NPCC.
The former Minister presumed that his sacking from the
Jamir’s Ministry was due to his differences on the
booklet, which, he said, was condemned by all section
of Naga society.
Jamir’s publication of the booklet was a deliberate
act of lowering the prestige of the Congress party and
the Government and also an attempt to "ruin the future
of Nagas", the former Minister said the controversial
booklet was widely distributed to Delhi and other
cities to convey that the NPCC stand by the 16-Point
Agreement of 1960 through which the present State of
Nagaland was created. Jamir believed that the
agreement had compromised the demand of the "Naga
underground Movement".
Therie also criticized the Chief Minister for placing
various preconditions to the ongoing political
negotiations between the Government of India and the
Naga underground groups, adding where was the
necessity of placing all this things when talks were
going on.
He said the Chief Minister during a meeting of
Commissioners, Secretaries and Heads of Departments on
November 20 last year unleashed his mind on them and
also conveyed to the Government of India that "any
settlement to the Naga political problem has to be
within the Indian Union or within the Constitution of
India", whereas the undergrounds have demanded talks
without any precondition which was acknowledged by the
Government of India.
Accusing Jamir of attempting to derail the ongoing
political negotiations between the Naga undergrounds
and the Government of India, Therie said he didn’t
believe Naga people would endorse the booklet which
was responsible for the present impasse in political
negotiations.
"Jamir is desperate that he is trying to identify
winning candidates from all constituencies in the
State for the ensuing polls because he thinks the
present incumbent cannot improve their positions",
said Therie. "I am sure many of the present Ministers
and MLAs will not get tickets too".
