A brief note about the discussion:
The historic nude protest (15th July 2004) was triggered by the brutal rape and murder of Thangjam Manorama, an alleged member of the People's Liberation Army, an underground group in Manipur by 17th Assam Rifles( A central paramilitary force deployed in Manipur)
Conflict areas such as Manipur and Jammu & Kashmir, which are currently under AFSPA (these areas are categorised as 'disturbed areas') have seen barbaric violence against people of the region. Apart from thousands and thousands of killing, enforced disappearances, arrests and torture, the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA, 1958) has also become synonymous with mass rapes and sexual violence in these areas. Although the cycle of violence continues in these areas, women resistance against such atrocities in parts of North East played a prominent role in bringing peace and justice.
Although there has been enough documentation around the human rights violations against women and children, we feel that feminist writing has not paid enough attention to the women's movements in the North-East and other conflict affected zones. Through this event, our endeavor is to highlight and understand how women negotiate life and regime under AFSPA 1958. Secondly, it is of special interest to understand how the women's movement is affected by being under constant threat of oppression in conflict areas.

The Organising Team
