Intel India Announces the Intel PhD Fellowship Program
- Aimed at boosting Academic Research in India by supporting deserving PhD Students -
New Delhi, India, March 29, 2014: Intel India today announced the Intel PhD Sponsorship program to boost quality research and enhance PhD programs across the country. In keeping with the Government of India’s agenda to boost quality research and enhance PhD programs, Intel India said that the PhD Fellowship Program will provide research opportunities for students in cutting edge technology as well as provide a platform for sharing industry knowledge and mentoring from senior technology leaders at Intel. The program will also provide best in the industry fellowships, research travel grants and contingency grants to the selected students.
The Intel PhD Fellowship program is part of the Intel Higher Education Program and will be available for eligible students from the academic year commencing July 2014. The Intel Higher Education Program builds collaboration with premier engineering and research institutions, universities and the government to bridge the gap between academia and industry standards and promote innovation and entrepreneurship, reaching more than 235,000 students and 4,500 faculties across 550 institutions to date.The Fellowship program was announced in an event attended by Directors and Deans of reputed technology institutions in the capital.
Globally, the Fellowship program was started in the early 1990s by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore to recognize and honor top students pioneering research in all areas that would benefit humankind. It was also a way to foster collaborative partnerships with universities, its faculty, and promote the next generation of technology leadership. The program has been operational for more than two decades. Intel in India has been doing world class research for over a decade now and this program would offer the selected students an opportunity to work with respected industry researchers across Intel India.
Speaking at the event, Ms Kumud Srinivasan, President Intel India said “Intel believes a robust innovative economy is dependent on a higher education system that generates technical graduates and entrepreneurs. Intel has been working with government and academia for more inclusive and sustainable growth, by accelerating digital access, promoting quality learning, and advancing innovation and entrepreneurship. With this initiative, Intel hopes to catalyze cutting edge research in India.”
Acknowledging the efforts of Intel’s Higher Education initiatives, the chief guest of the event Dr. Ajay Kumar, Joint Secretary, Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India said “India has always prided itself in being home to some of the best technical talent in the world. Initiatives like this provide aspiring students a right balance of academic exposure and industry involvement giving them a well-rounded learning experience.”
Intel India will share details of research areas, application process and fellowship benefits to selected technology institutions in order for them to nominate deserving PhD candidates for this fellowship. A research committee at Intel will evaluate the candidature of the PhD student based on the research areas, engineering and research goals of the PhD thesis and novelty in addressing a problem. The selected candidates will be awarded a fellowship of up to Rs.570000/- per annum (Rs Five Lac Seventy thousand) for a period of up to four years that includes the student stipend, contingency research and travel grant to attend conferences and research forums.
