Growing culture of private tuitions : Poor pay of Pvt school teachers
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: January 25 2016 -
It is that time of the year again.
In less than 60 days, thousands of students will be appearing for their Class X and Class XII board examinations and this is indeed nervous time for numerous parents.
Diligent students will no doubt do well and bring laurels to their schools and families, but how about the rest ?
In the absence of alternatives, it is again going to be marks which will decide the performance of the students and possibly their future too.
The interesting question is how well prepared are the students ?
Remember numerous days were lost in the year just gone by, first in the valley and then after August 31, in the hill districts, particularly in Churachandpur.
The Board of Secondary Education, Manipur may understand the situation but how about students who are going to appear in the examinations conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) or the Indian Council of Secondary Education (ICSE) ?
Not likely that these boards will understand the ground situation and the burden of the days lost will have to be borne by the students and their parents/elders.
Even as the young students are preparing for their examinations, it is time for everyone to seriously ponder over the plight of the young students.
Why drag them in any issue which should strictly be adult affairs ?
Why jeopardise their academic pursuit and to a certain extent their future ?
As in the past private schools are sure to outperform the Government institutions and again this is where questions need to raised on the pay structure of teachers employed in private schools.
As pointed out numerous times in this column, private school teachers continue to be paid a pittance.
It is to make up for the meagre pay that all of them, particularly Science and Maths teachers, resort to private tuitions charging hefty fees.
To ensure that their children stay in the race, parents go the extra mile to send their children to private tuitions and at times even hire home tutors.
All these obviously come with a big price.
Given this reality, it is not uncommon to see that most teachers are more focused on giving private tuitions at the cost of delivering their duty inside the classrooms.
So for the poor pay that private school teachers get, it is the parents and elders of the family who have to shell out by sending their children to private tuition.
Take this reality with the prevailing situation, where the academic pursuit of the young students are disturbed annually and the situation is just right to pile more pressure on the parents.
Adding to the tragedy is the complete silence of everyone on this crucial matter.
