Electing people's representatives : The question of sincerity
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: Ocotber 15, 2014 -
Speaking straight from the heart or seeking to score some brownie points.
Good press material. This much is clear without an iota of doubt in the assertion of the Deputy Chief Minister that the elected representatives of the people lack sincerity.
The place and the timing was good too for it could not have come at a better place than a workshop on the Role of the Media for Empowerment of Panchayati Raj System.
It is not without reason that the elected representatives of the people have for long been the perfect whipping boy of all public angst and it says something significant that the Deputy Chief Minister sought to convey that this is not lost on him on the first day of the workshop.
A no nonsense acknowledgement of the ills dogging the society, though the distinct possibility of the political acumen of the man from Nungba Assembly Constituency coming to the fore is not something which can be wished away that easily.
There are possibilities galore but it is nevertheless significant to note that the Deputy Chief Minister thought it fit to point a finger at his colleagues though there is every possibility of four more fingers pointing back at him.
That most of the elected representatives lack sincerity and are there more to live off the perks and privileges that come along with being a representative of the people is a given.
A valid point which cannot be refuted under any circumstances. Something which the elected members would do well to learn.
Simultaneously it would also do well for the people as a whole to learn a lesson or two from the observation of the Deputy Chief Minister.
In coming down heavily on his colleagues, the Deputy Chief Minister too did not forget to mention that the people too have a responsibility.
Gaikhangam did not go into the details nor did he spell it out, but the validity behind his call to the people can be gauged from the fact that the elected representatives are elected by the people and none else.
A point which should become self explanatory in the emergence of numerous fly by night operators who have been elected.
There must be a reason why it is often said that the people get the type of Government they deserve. Stretch this a little bit and it can cover the type of people’s representatives.
Not without reason why there has been a growing debate or discussion on the need to educate the public on the importance of their vote.
When money buys vote, then how far can the people expect from their representatives ? A question which has been raised numerous times in this column.
That this poser is still valid today says something significantly disturbing.
Whatever reason it may be but the Deputy Chief Minister has raised a valid point and all the more reason for the people to start introspecting, for the type of people they send to represent them will have a direct impact on their lives.
