The Union government's response to Anna Hazare's fast, is in a complete contrast to it's almost absence of any response, to the fast by Irom Sharmila Chanu. Sharmila, a poet and an activist from Manipur, has been sitting on fast since 2000, demanding the repeal of the Arms Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).

This kind what several civil rights activists term as "hypocritical" behavior on part of the government, has baffled and agitated a large section of the civil society, which is planning to start a nationwide "Save Sharmila Campaign" on 2nd of October, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, in order to create awareness among the masses about her fast.

"The almost pathetic response of the government to Irom Sharmila's fast is some thing which has really disturbed us because we believe that a non-violent protest should not be ignored by the government and the masses. That's why we have planned to start this nationwide signature cum awareness campaign," said Faisal Khan from the National Alliance of People's Movement (NAPM)

The campaign includes a signature campaign in all major cities/ state capitals of India. The signature campaign will conclude on December 10, which is the International Human Rights Day, when all the signatures will be handed over to the President of India. It will be followed by a fast and a peace march from India Gate to the President's House.

Khan informed TCN that the Campaign will highlight several demands from the government, including asking the government to send an all party delegation to Irom Sharmila to initiate talks with her.
