Brainstorming Meeting : Issue of Violence against people from North East
October 20, 2014:
RESIST RACIST MAJORITARIANISM :
STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST PEOPLE FROM NORTH EAST !!!
Dear all,
This mail is being written to you to express a concern regarding increasing violence against the people from North East. The racism and bias against the people from north east is rampant and has been taking the form of violence repeatedly. The violence is not just what is physical but also in the way they are looked at, the way they are called names, the way they are judged and considered an "outsider" in their own country.
While on one hand the State has left no stones unturned in sustaining it's control over the north eastern territories with the use of draconian laws such as AFSPA, on the other it has refused to acknowledge, understand, integrate or appreciate the difference in their ethnicity and culture. The north eastern people are looked at from the lens of majority and after finding them different made to bear the brunt of the difference.
The issue of discrimination against people from north east is not new but it is one that requires immediate response from our end as the changing political scenario is reinforcing this discrimination on not just the people belonging to a different ethnicity but also those who do not conform to the set and pre –defined majority identity and norms. It is going against all those who dress differently, eat differently, speak differently, walk differently and THINK differently. In fact, such are the clever ways of operating that on face, the slogan of “Unity in Diversity” is being used to sell the country tickets to tourists but have a very great acceptance towards calling people with racist names like "chinky", "momo", "nepalee" etc.
Hence, it is essential for all of us that even though not being from that region we respect and understand the woes of fellow vibrant citizens of the country and come together and brainstorm over how to oppose this devastating process of Homogenization that is underway.
Let us sit together
on 21st October
at Indian Social Institute, Lodhi Road
in Room 311
at 3:00 pm and
chalk out a response to the increasing violence against people from north east. Hope to have your presence there.
