Bid to attract the brightest : Competition among schools
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: May 09 2018 -
Positive development. Now with the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Manipur having declared the Class XII results, one sees private institutions highlighting the achievements of their students and going to town announcing a number of freebies, all with the intention of attracting the best students.
This will be more so once the Class X examination results are declared.
Competition today is no longer understood only in the realm of competition amongst the students but also amongst the educational institutions and this augurs really well for the students who want to sharpen their competitive edge for today’s world practically does not have anything much substantial for the second best.
And competition is indeed getting more intense. Producing bright students or rather toppers is today no longer the monopoly of some schools or institutions and this is what is encouraging.
With some, rather two institutions, which first made a name for themselves in coaching students for the pre-medical and pre-engineering tests, now stepping into the domain of educating students at the plus 2 level, the competition amongst the institutes has only sharpened.
The competition will only get more intense as some Mission schools based in Imphal are today understood to have upgraded to the Class XII level.
Others may follow suit and such a step augurs well for the students and the parents.
Education at the Class X and Class XII level would be so uniform if only the institutes in the hills also live up to the competition level, after all it is not encouraging to see only students studying in Imphal based institutions monopolising the merit or rankers list.
A lone Don Bosco Maram cannot make the difference.
The competition, as understood through the prism of grabbing the attention of the people, will multiply once the Class X result is announced.
Open any newspaper and once is sure to be greeted by educational institutes, highlighting the performance of its students at the Class XII level and offering freebies to the toppers and those who come higher up in the merit list.
Apart from the institutes based in Imphal, it is also time for institutions based outside the State to come wooing the attention of students and parents, particularly of those who have finished their Class XII examinations.
For those who could not get in through the JEE or other competitive examinations, these institutes do offer the same courses.
And it is here that parents and guardians need to be extra cautious about the institutes they choose for their children.
Check to see if it is recognised by the UGC and approved by the AICTE.
What is the medium of instruction ?
The last query is important for it will not make much sense to the students from Manipur if the class lectures are going to be delivered in a language they are not at all comfortable with.
For those who have made it into professional courses, particularly after getting through NEET or JEE this should not be a cause of concern, but this should be very important for parents whose children could not make the cut for JEE.
This is now admission time and it is only right that parents and guardians are well informed and yes all ought to be on guard against the breed of people who peddle education.
