Abstract
Bhaktirasgi Maangal-Khonjel: Sounds and Lights of Devotion is an exploration of classical Manipuri dance depicting its ritual roots. It consists of live performance of different aspects of Manipuri dance and screening of film footage depicting Rasleela, Sankirtan and Vasak from several locations in Manipur. The live dance pieces are all choreographed by late Guru Bipin Singh (in collaboration with the Jhaveri sisters) and the film footage from several locations from Manipur is shot and archived by Sohini Ray.
In this talk Sohini Ray will discuss different aspects of the making of this production – including the logistics of filming and archiving traditional dances in Manipur, combining media and live performance and the challenges of presenting academic research in a creative, non-traditional format.
