Awareness Programme on Crime Against Women and Women Empowerment Held

The Manipuri Muslim Online Forum (MMOF) with able support of Ajmal Foundation, Guwahati organised a One Day Awareness Programme on Crime Against Women and Women Empowerment on 19th day of January, 2014 at Paobitek Mayai Leiaki in Imphal West District of Manipur State. In the programmeLate Majida Khan, the then member of Manipur State Commission for Women was honoured by reading out her short life history.
In the programme, resource persons namely 1. Ms Noorjahan, President UMMDWO, 2. Ms. Nazima Begum, Secretary UMMDWO, 3. Mohd. Jakiruddin MPS, Addl. SP Kangpokpi 4. Aranbam (O) Robita Leima, Secy, Organisation for Women against Crime (Manipur Chapter), 5. Ngangom Tejkumar, Advocate and 6. Moulana Ruhul Amin, Councillor Thongkhong Luxmi Nagar Panchayat delivered valuable speeches on the topics
(i) Women Empowerment,
(ii) Root cause of Domestic Violence and how to tackle it,
(iii) Crime Against Women and Role of Police,
(iv) Crime against Women,
(v) Legal aspect of Crime against Women and
(vi) Crime against Women –an Islamic Perspective.

In her speech, Noorjahan stated that if the Muslim males and females strictly follow teachings of Islam through Quran and Hadith, Muslim Women shall automatically be empowered. So we all women should try our best to strictly follow the teachings of Islam and appeal the male folks to honour and respect the women and provide their fundamental rights. A(O) Robita Leima, Secretary, Organisation for Indian Women Against Crime Najima Begum stated that major root cause of Domestic Violence against women are
(i) marriage between un-equivalent couples like social status, living standard, etc.
(ii) early marriages,
(iii) insufficient dowry,
(iv) impatience to the part of female, etc.
To prevent such violence, parents of both sides must be careful to marry their children with competent partners; mehr of daughter should not be used for purchase of dowry; husband must respect the feelings of their wives as per law particularly Islamic Sariah in the case of Muslim Community; trust between married couples; women folk should be patience, etc.

In short, everyone must be perfect before marriage to avoid post marriage Domestic Violence. Mohd. Jakiruddin stated that Women Empowerment is of three steps.
(i) Women emancipation – it was initiated by the Bengali Scholar Iswarchandra Vidya Sagar. For a peaceful society, we should treat the female section positively. Every law abiding establishments are trying to prevent crime against women.
Particularly in the case of Police Department, Women police has been deployed in every police station of the State. State Govt. is under process to open Women Police Station in every Districts, Anti-trafficking unit has been established in every districts. Crimes are faced in three stages, (i) Crime against female child, like trafficking from one place to other. Fortunately such crime is rare in Manipur.
(ii) Crime against adolescent women. Such crime can easily be prevented by avoiding blackmail of every type by male. Identify the character of your intimate ones.
(iii) Crime against married women.
It is mainly caused due to misunderstanding between married couples. To avoid this type of crime, female must choose their trustworthy partner. Ms. Anwari Noorjahan, President, United Manipuri Muslim Women Development Organisation Robita Leima in her speech stated that crime like rape is rare in Muslim Community because Muslim women maintain their purdah properly. It is also proven by the female audiences participating the days programme and the partition between male and female audiences.
In the programme, a simple presentations was distributed to the 15 selected Senior Citizens, Social Activists and Disable Persons of Paobitek and surrounding villages.
