Prof. Dr. Pavel Ozerov *
As a linguist interested in the languages of north-eastern India, I closely follow the recent news about the success of Mr. Chikari Tisso, a language activist from the Karbi community in Assam.
Mr. Chikari Tisso has been just awarded the most prestigious prize worldwide for community-based language activism: he has been announced as the recipient of the Excellence in Community Linguistics Award of the Linguistic Society of America for the coming year 2021.
In addition to being extremely happy for Mr. Tisso’s success, What about the first ever person from India who received this award?
In fact, the holder of this award for 2020 is Mr. Mosyel Syelsaangthyel Khaling from the Uipo (Khoibu) tribe in Manipur.

Mr. Mosyel Syelsaangthyel Khaling was awarded this most prestigious prize last year in the annual meeting of the Linguistic Society of America, in recognition of his longstanding and continuous efforts to document, develop, promote and maintain the Uipo (Khoibu) language
There are dozens of prominent community activists nominated for this major prize from all around the world. The list of former recipients includes representatives of the First People of North and South America, Native Australian communities and speakers of Scottish Gaelic.
Remarkably, it is the second year in a row that this award goes to Northeast India, this time shifting from a community in Manipur to Assam.
