Asian Games or Korean Games?
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: Ocotber 01, 2014 -
It was almost impossible for the Korean pugilists to beat their Manipuri counterparts at the ongoing Incheon Asian Games, but being the host nation, the judges favoured the local boxers and threw the great boxers Laishram Sarita and Laishram Devendra out of the ring.
It was the saddest part of the Incheon Asian Games. Korea was never expected to be so unfair.
The bouts of both Sarita and Devendro were witnessed by millions of people across the globe and they all know who the real winners are.
Despite having trained in conducting boxing matches for several years, the judges in the bouts of Sarita and Devendro seemed to have lost their senses all of a sudden by putting their professional expertise in the dustbin.
The enraged Indians, in particular the Manipuris, took up social networking sites to protest the unfair judgement.
Facebook and Twitter were flooded with posts and comments condemning the Koreans for their sinister attitude towards the Manipuri boxers.
The sad events took place not so long after the victory of Mary Kom’s semi-final bout.
The happy moments of Mary Kom punching her opponents to the path of winning the gold medal were soon overshadowed by the unfairness of the incapable judges, who were dancing to the tune of the Koreans.
It seems that the Koreans have lost all their might chasing the Chinese and Japanese athletes.
As a last resort to save their face, the Koreans are deliberately targeting the Manipuri boxers to win some more medals by hook or crook. The judges might have thought it was simply the Korean Games and not the Asiad, and they probably noticed only the Koreans inside the ring.
The reactions of some die-hard fans of the Indian boxers were very intense.
One Twitter post read as "Asian Games have turned to Korean Games as they play spoilsport to the Indian boxing contingent. Why are the Koreans not playing with Chinese or the Japanese who have had them under their feet for so many years. I accept sports has to be played with the spirit, but not like this Koreans...India can hit them hard by not allowing any Korean (Cars, Mobiles) products to be sold in India, which will lead them to eat trash in the future."
In fact, the ‘good image’ of the Koreans has fallen drastically before the Indians in the aftermath of the unfair bouts.
The whole world witnessed the bouts and everyone (except the judges) knew who the real winners were.
It was really an unfortunate event, but the Manipuri boxers should not be let down by this Asian Games controversy.
They should vow to take revenge against the Koreans by performing their best to clinch gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Real champions cannot be suppressed by any force. They will obviously rise only to be acknowledged by the whole world.
Let’s hope for the best in Mary Kom’s final bout.
Let there be no controversy again in Incheon Games. Mary’s gold medal can be a befitting response to the Koreans.
The courage and determination of the Manipuri boxers are something the Koreans cannot copy or reproduce, though many of the Manipuri young boys and girls are keen followers of the Korean fashion.
