Invitation
Discussion on "AFSPA, Indian Constitution and Indigenous Peoples in NE Region" in observance of 3rd foundation day of Human Rights Initiative,
on 9 August 2010 at HRI Office Thangapat Mapan, Palace Compound, Imphal
Sir/Madam
As we know the Government of India adopted the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 from the Armed (Forces Special) Powers Ordinance, 1942
which British Colonial Power used for cracking down the Indian freedom movement. For years it has been a special power which encourages armed
forces and police (de facto) to deprive right to life, fundamental freedom and inherent dignity particularly of Indigenous Peoples of NE region.
o Has this Act helped to improve the situation over such long period of time?
o Does AFSPA address any root causes of the issues in NE?
o At what extend does Indian Constitution upheld and compliance with AFSPA?
o How far is this Act colonial and racial discriminatory?
o At what extent does AFSPA infringe international human rights law and other international instruments?
With a thought of finding ways together to protect and promote right to life, liberty, equality and dignity in the NE region Human Rights
Initiative (HRI) team has the great pleasure in inviting you to the discussion on 'AFSPA, Indian Constitution and Indigenous Peoples in NE Region.'
