The 25th Anniversary of 8.8.88 Nationwide Peoples' Uprising in Burma
8th August 1988 –
The coming 8th August mark the 25th anniversary of Burma's democratic uprising, popularly known as 8888, a People's Movement for Democracy, which is a historic moment for the entire people who defied and overthrew the dictatorial regime under the ruling Burmese Socialist Programme Party in 1988. During the uprising, the military men headed by Gen. Ne Win, a military dictatorship, killed thousands of innocent and unarmed peaceful protestors. Today, it has completed 25 years. On that day, the darkness overwhelmed the entire country; on the one hand, the light of democracy started entering into the people's consciousness and wiped out the darkness.
Many demands that were made by the entire people during the democratic uprising have not yet fulfilled, and the current quasi-civilian government has neglected to grant the genuine democracy and human rights until now because of that the democratic struggle has not come to an end yet. We all have to march forward continually and fight for democracy and human rights in Burma/Myanmar.
On the occasion of 25th Anniversary of 8.8.88 people uprising for democracy and human rights in Burma, we Burmese democracy activists and refugees in Delhi are organizing a peaceful protest rally at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi on 8th August 2013. The protest will urge to continue democratic struggle until and unless the following crucial points below are implemented.
o To investigate and punish the culprits who committed the crimes and killed the people who were demanding democracy during the 8888 national uprising.
o To abrogate the 2008-constitution and to write a new one in accordance with the democratic criteria and the people's wills.
o To initiate for a genuine peace process.
o To implement for a Federal Union wherein the self-determination of ethnic nationalities' own affairs are constitutionally granted.
