15 is Waiting for You Alice
Linthoi Chanu *
I am not living next door to Alice
But I know
15 was the time of embracing womanhood
With just a bra beneath the top
Leaving childhood with vest that concealed the straps.
I braved the twinge of plucking eyebrows
And roamed around Canchipur, bunking classes.
Fantasies of first kiss kept me awake all night
And at dawn, studied for a 25-year-old me.
It was also the time
I knew my mother would wait for me at the leirak machin
As evening approached.
I5 (/16) was the best time of my life
But it was never the time
I wanted to risk my life
For a lost cause.
Come back Alice.
15 is waiting for you.
