In connection with the 108th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Governor Dr SS Sidhu today inaugurated the newly constructed building of INA Museum at Moirang Kangla, dedicating it to all the soldiers of the Indian National Army, both known and many more unknown, who fought and sacrificed their lives for the cause of India's freedom.
Art and Culture Minister Ph Parijat presided over the commemorative function attended by MLA of Moirang A/C S Gopal, Lok Sabha MP from Assam Sylvis Kondakan and resident advisor of INA Memorial Advisory Committee M Manindra as guests of honour.
Speaking at the function, Sidhu said that INA memorial brings back to us the vivid memories of the heroes of INA who sacrificed their lives at the altar of India's Independence.
The present generation has to remember that India's freedom was not a gift of the Britishers, but it was attained after receiving lathi blows, showers of bullets and years of languishing in jails, he said.
He observed that erection of the INA Memorial at Moirang was in recognition of its historic importance in the freedom struggle of India.
It was at this sacred place at Moirang Kangla where the Indian National Army under the leadership of Subhas Chandra Bose hoisted the tri-colour flag of Azad Hind Government for the first time on the Indian soil on April 14, 1944, he recalled.
Taking note of a memorandum submitted by Moirang Municipal Council, the Governor assured that recommendation would be made to the Union Ministry concerned for taking up appropriate measures for development of Moirang in view of its historical importance.
The Governor also released view cards and brochures during the function.
Giving the presidential address, Parijat observed that the history of Moirang is so important that its history can be of Moirang itself could be considered as history of Manipur.
The Art and Culture Minister also gave his assurance of making every efforts for development of Moirang.
Resident Advisor of INA Memorial Advisory Committee M Manindra informed that the initiative for construction of the new INA Museum was taken up with contribution made by former INA veterans and private individuals.
But the task was handed over to the Government later on.
The foundation stone of the Museum was laid by the then Governor Lt Gen (Retd) VK Nayar in 1993 with allotted of fund in 9th Five Year Plan.
The total estimated cost of the museum building which was inaugurated today is said to be Rs 6 crores.
