The 22nd general conference cum sports of the Tangkhul Naga Valley Students' Association has been kicked off Youth Affairs and Sports Minister N Biren at Ramrei Katamnao Long ground in Ukhrul district today.
The general conference cum sports meet scheduled to continue till February 3 is being participated 24 southern Tangkhul villages.
The main features of the event are football and volleyball tournaments, cultural programmes, quiz and debate competitions.
Speaking at the opening ceremony as chief guest, N Biren remarked that organisation of such sports meets in interior areas can cultivate a sporting culture.
Concentration on sports activities free from political influence would make youngsters valuable assets of the State, he said.
He said that the State Government has plans to send coaches to interior area to guide promising players.
In a gesture of support to the sports meet, the Youth Affairs and Sports Minister donated Rs 30,000 to the organisers.
Incidentally, most of the villagers settling in Ramrei village are those who moved from villages affected by Thoubal MultiPurpose Project.
