State Boxer Asian Champion Mayengbam Suranjoy who won gold medal in the Commonwealth Boxing Championships held at New Delhi has returned home today for an eight-day leave.
A joyous family of Suranjoy and All Uchiwa Development Association (AUDA), Imphal West along with villagers of Uchiwa warmly welcomed the glorius boxer of Manipur who outclassed many international boxers in his short span of career to bring laurels for the state and the country.
It may be recalled that Suranjoy (52 kg) defeated Oliver Lavigi of Czech Republic 4-0 in just 25 seconds to win the gold medal.
In the championships, India won six gold which incuded Olympic Bronze medallist Vijender Singh, Hockey-player-turned-boxer Amandeep Singh, World Cup bronze Medallist, Dinesh Kumar, Asian bronze medallist Paramjeet Samota and Jai Bhagwan.
He arrived here at 10.30 am today and family members and AUDA members waiting there heartily welcomed him with garlands when he stepped out of the Tulihal Airport building.
Coach Ibomcha also came to welcome him.
Suranjoy had so far won six gold and one bronze in a short stint of one year.
He won one gold in a championship held in Czech Republic last year.
He also gold in AK Mishra championship held in New Delhi, Asian Championship held in China, AIBA World Continental President Cup held in Aza Baizan, SAF Games held in Bangladesh.
He also won a bronze medal in Chemistry Cup held in Germany in February lamst year.
It may be recalled that Suranjoy was declared best boxer in the AIBA World Continental President Cup held in Azar Baizan.
He participated in the championship representing Asia.
At present he is preparing for the upcoming Commonwealth Games which is to be held in New Delhi from October this year.
He is also practising to represent India in the Asian Games which is to be held in November this year at China.
He will be leaving Imphal after his eight-day leave and will continue his training stint at Cuba for upcoming international events.
