Maniur Police Sports Club (MPSC) has won the 1st 57 Mtn Divn Polo Tournament-2010 organised by Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association under the aegis of 57 Mtn Divn.
MPSC defeated Khurai Polo Club (A) 5-2 in the final match played at Mapal Kangjeibung here today and clinched the prestigeous winner's trophy.
Noted player of MPSC, S Bimol won the best player prize.
GOC, 57 Mtn Divn, Maj Gen, DS Hooda, who was the chief guest of the final match and handed over the trophy and Rs 10,000 as cash prize to the winner team.
Vice president of Manipur Olympic Association, N Shyamananda, IPS handed over Rs 7,000 to the runners up, Khurai Polo Club (A).
Deputy GOC, 57 Mtn Divn, Brig RS Grewal, who was the guest of honour, gave Rs 5,000 to the best player of the tournament, S Bimol of MPSC.
Maj Gen Hooda also gave Rs 50,000 to the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association as a gesture of encouragement in its efforts to promote Polo.
Speaking at the concluding ceremony of the tournament, GOC, Maj Gen Hooda affirmed that that Sagol Kangjei (Polo) is a game that has been associated with Manipur since time immemorial.
He said, people of Manipur should always help in promoting the game.
The Army has always been lending a helping hand to Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association whenever it asked.
The GOC thanked the Association for organising the tournament and making it successful.
He also thanked all the Polo players for their participation.
President of the Association, N Shyamananda, who presided over the concluding match, said that the Association has always been involved in promotion and development of the Polo game, which is one of the oldest games of Manipur.
With the help of Army, a number of Polo players had gone to Kolkata and Hyderbad to get more exposure, which has resulted in better performance.
Prior to the final match, the old traditional game, "Pana Kangjei" was played as a demonstration which captivated the audience.
