Even though gold medal eluded State team/players on the penultimate day of the 33rd National Games today Manipur managed to add four silver medals and a bronze to its tally to remain in second position behind Services Sports Control Board.
The silver medals came in women�s boxing, football and cycling events.
Boxers M Ibemcha Devi (60 kg) and Radiya (66 kg) respectively conceded defeats to Assam�s Pranamika Bora and Jharkhand�s Aruna Mishra in the finals.
State quartet of Ch Rameshwori, Tombisana, Chaoba and Renubala also finished second in the women�s team time trial competition.
Orissa eves shocked defending champions Manipur in the women�s football final winning the pulsating tie 4-2 via the tie-breaker after normal period was locked in a goalless draw.
This is the first time Manipur had not won the final since women�s football was introduced in the National Games.
The lone bronze was secured by A romabati Devi in the 53 kg women�s kumite (karate) competition.
PTI adds: Talented Delhi boy Divij Sharan clinched the gold medal in doubles tennis event while Orissa pulled off a stunning upset win over traditional powerhouse Manipur in women's football on a violence marred penultimate day at hockey field in the 33rd National Games here today.
A day after seizing the top slot from Manipur in the medal chart, Services maintained their numero uno rank with an overall gold haul of 55, in addition to garnering 44 silver and 37 bronze.
Manipur remained second at 48-29-36, but the day belonged to hosts Assam who shopped medals from the boxing ring, cycling velodrome as also other disciplnes to boost their gold tally to 37, in addition to 49 silver and 52 bronze collections.
Though the host state culd not improve upon their overnight third position, their encouraging showing is sure to make the local fans proud as the prestigious multi-disciplinary event is set for a grand closing tomorrrow in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Delhi ruled the tennis court sweeping all but one gold at stake, as their leading player Divij Sharan won a double crown by claiming the men's singles and then partnering Ashutosh Singh to the doubles title.
