Imphal, February 07: The Governor Dr SS Sidhu today flagged-off the Manipur contingent for the 33rd National Games at Guwahati from the Khuman Lampak Sports complex.

The 487 strong contingent with Th Joykumar as the chief-de-mission drove out from the complex at 10 am and comprise of players, officials and functionaries of the Manipur Olympic Association.

While the State's women football team had already left for the Games venue some days back, today's contingent comprised of sportspersons who would vie for top honours in athletics, wushu, swimming, archery, taekwondo, canoeing & kayaking, boxing, cycling, shooting, fencing, rugby, equestrian and weight-lifting events.

In his brief remarks during the official send-off ceremony, the Governor exuded confidence that Manipur sportspersons would repeat the feat of emerging as the overall champions as was achieved when the State hosted the National Games some years back.

Noting commendable strides made by State players in the national sports arena, Dr Sidhu exhorted the contingent to compete with the spirit and confidence to win the Raja Bhalindra Singh Trophy.

"Winning or losing is a part of the game.

The important thing is participation and to put your best foot forward in the spirit of sportsmanship," said the Governor and conveyed that Government of Assam has assured full-proof security arrangements in order to ensure that the 33rd National Games is held in a smooth, peaceful and successful manner.

The National games will begin from February 9.
