As in the previous years, the Meira Paibi Day will be observed in nine different places of the State on May 28, informed a press release issued by the Meira Paibi Numit Observation Committee.
The Day is being observed over the years on the death anniversary of Meira Paibi leader Sinam Priyari who was martyred on May 28, 1980 during a massive movement of Meira Paibis against the atrocity of security forces.
The sustained and massive Meira Paibi movement was launched against the atrocity committed by security forces at Patsoi area in the aftermath of a shoot-out there on April 26, 1980. In the subsequent terror unleashed by security forces after the shoot-out, many women were raped in front of their brothers, one Bino was executed just before her infant child, 10 year old Thokchom Laikham and Indrajit were mercilessly shot dead.
Moreover, driver in Imphal Municipal Council Angou was shot dead by security forces on his way to office.
Not only that all the people of Patsoi part I including sick people and small children were forced to stand in the sun, not allowing them to drink a drop of water while thrashing them all the day, recalled the Committee.
This year the Meira Paibi Day will be observed at GM Hall Imphal, Ningthoukhong community hall, Nambol Bazar, Sawombung Bazar, Andro Kangjeibung, Wabgai Lamkhai community hall, Mayanglangjing, Moreh and Jiribam, added the release.
