A former KYKL activist identified as Takhellambam Somorjit (25) s/o T Nobin of Charangpat Mayai Leikai has been gunned down by personnel of 34 AR at Kabrang Chingjin of Thoubal district at around 11 am today.
A 9 mm pistol and three rounds have been reportedly recovered from the slain person, whose body at RIMS morgue.
A pocket dairy bearing the name 'Rocky' and telephone numbers was also recovered.
Even though police source affirmed that Somorjit was a former member of the KYKL, a statement issued by PRO IGAR (S) speculated that the slain individual might be a KCP activist.
Troops of 34 AR, while conducting an operation on being informed of movement of KCP activists for collection of extortion money, came under firing as a chase ensued after 2/3 youths fled on seeing the security personnel arrive at near Thoubal College, said the PRO.
While one was killed in retaliatory firing the other accomplices managed to escaped.
Recovery of a small arm along with spent and live cartridges was also mentioned in the PRO's statement.
