Imphal, February 20, 2010:
After several relic items were discovered while digging a pond in the plot of one Laishram Modhumangol of Porompat Thawanthaba Leikai a few days back, one more coffin of historic period was discovered today.
Former Principal of DM College of Commerce and Archeologist Dr O Kumar who was present at the digging site, opined that the coffin would be of pre-Hinduism period, when Meiteis buried dead bodies according to custom of the period.
The coffin discovered today is little more than five feet long and about 3 inches wide.
Dr Kumar said that the coffin was made out of a big tree trunk by carving out the interior portion.
A gasket containing betel nuts was also found inside the coffin.
