Imphal, November 19: The Southern Tangkhul Students' Union has demanded the suspension of the ongoing construction work of Mapithel Dam under Thoubal Multipurpose Project.

In a memorandum submitted to the IFCD Minister, it expressed strong objection to the construction of the dam saying that it has severely affected the livelihood and welfare of the people.

Showing solidarity with the Mapithel Dam Affected Villagers' Organisation, the Union has resolved to support and endorse resolutions adopted by the villagers, the statement added.

The memorandum urged to halt the construction process until the Rehabilitation and Resettlement Programme of 1990 and terms and conditions agreed in 1993 between the Government and affected villagers has been reviewed and amended.
