With the Union Ministry of Urban Development giving its approval on taking up a comprehensive drainage project for Imphal city, installation of 10 stainless steel bus waiting sheds and tiled footpaths are set to give a city sense to Imphal soon.
Disclosing this to The Sangai Express, an official source informed that Central Sanction and Monitoring Committee of the Ministry recently cleared a comprehensive drainage project to be taken up in Imphal Municipality areas under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewable Mission.
To be executed within two years, the project is expected to bring about a complete overhaul in the existing drainage system of Imphal city which still calls for attention inspite of the joint maintenance and repairing by Works, PHED and IMC from time to time, the source said.
The execution of the project would begin from next year and main emphasis would be on upgrading the drainage lines of the market places and residential areas, the source disclosed.
The source further conveyed that under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewable Mission, there is plan not only for installation of stainless steel bus waiting sheds at 10 different places of Imphal city but also for tiling the footpath of important roads of the capital city.
Apart from development of the Thangapat at Sagolband Bijoy Govindajee, preparation of a conceptual plan on construction of a multi-storeyed parking lot for Paona Bazar, Thangal Bazar and Governor Road at the site of the present Electricity office at Keishampat has also been completed, the source further disclosed.
Some of the projects which have been taken up or would be taken under the JNUR Project include introduction of 25 low floor bus services, solid waste management project, development of the Naga Nullah and Nambul river from Khoyathong to Keishampat, induction o two mobile sweepers, implementation of housing scheme, etc.
Construction of water supply schemes at Thoubal, Jiribam, Kakching, Moirang and Bishnupur to ensure safe drinking water to the people have also been approved by the Ministry, it added.
