Imphal, February 21:
After escalating tension and reeling under sporadic agitation, Chandel district headquarters today returned to normalcy as the nine women leaders abducted by unidentified persons on February 19 night were released late last night.
According to official sources, the abducted women were set free at around 11 pm yesterday and with the news spreading fast Chandel remained free from any agitation.
Chandel district womenfolk had enforced a bandh yesterday to protest the abduction which took place a day after a peace rally was organised in the Dist Hqs demanding free and fair polling in the third phase slated for February 23. Meanwhile, polling personnel along with their material for the third phase election have assembled at the Dist Hqs and are being briefed before they leave for their respective stations.
Of all the polling stations in the district, eight are located in remote areas for which helicopters would be used to transport polling materials like EVMs.
