Imphal, November 20: A statue of Jananeta Hijam Irabot is set to come up at Tripura by December this year.

Announcing this to the media today at Manipur Press Club, president of Irabot Foundation, Manipur, Thounajam Iboyaima said that the initiative to set up the statue of the late leader was taken up by the Jananeta Hijam Irabot Memorial Trust, Tripura but since it faced severe fund constraint, the Irabot Foundation has decided to chip in with financial help and complete the statue.

Iboyaima said that the Foundation had also played its part in setting up a statue of the Jananeta at Bangladesh last year and added that it has been the aspiration of the Foundation to set up a similar statue at Tripura.

Now that aspiration is going to be realised, he said and added that this was all due to the coming of minds between the Foundation and the Trust at Tripura.

The statue will be set either on December 12 to coincide with Nupi Lan or December 30, the date on which Irabot erased the name Hindu from the Nikhil Manipuri Hindu Sabha.

The Foundation will take cultural troupes from Manipur on the date the statue is to be set up in Tripura, he added.

Work on the statue started from August this year, said Iboyaima and added that its height is seven feet.

Eighty percent of the work is finalised, said the president of the Jananeta Hijam Irabot Memorial Trust Aheibam Churamani from Tripura and added that the work is being executed by Hijam Thamoi.

The raw material used is white cement.

Secretary of the Trust, Ph Brajamohan said that a sum of Rs 55,000 has already been set aside to instal the statue at Rajbari in North Tripura district.

However the Trust was not in any position to pump in more money, said Brajamohan and added that now with the help from the Foundation from Manipur, the statue will be completed soon.

If the Chief Ministers of Manipur and Tripura can grace the occasion when the statue is set up, then it would be an important milestone for the Manipuris settled in Tripura, observed Brajamohan.
