Imphal, January 19 2010: The State Government has been making all efforts to commence the maiden session of the Imphal National Institute of Technology from August this year.

This was stated by Education Minister L Jayantakumar while announcing recipient of the Manipur State Award for Literature 2009 this afternoon.

Directors of the NITs of Manipur, Tripura and Nagaland PK Ghosh visited Imphal a few days back and made an assessment of the land acquired by the State Government for construction of NIT at Lamphelpat as well as the newly constructed library building of Government Polytechnic which would serve as temporary class-rooms of NIT.

Jayantakumar said the State Education Commissioner and NIT Director in-charge have submitted a report to the Ministry of Human Resource Development yesterday.

The NIT Director wanted the State Government to set aside an area of about 1000 acres as against 313 acres already acquired by the State Government for the institution.

In accordance to the suggestion of the Director, the State Government has initiated due process to evict encroachers from Lamphelpat so that the vacated land can be added to the campus of NIT, Jayantakumar said.

The maiden session slated to commence from August would have 160 seats, out of which 80 are reserved for students belonging to the State while the other 80 seats would be shared by the other States.

On being asked about reports of private schools imposing tuition fees for the last four months during which no class was conducted, he said the Education Department has not decided on any course of action.

"Nevertheless, the Department would look into the matter", he added.

Stating that the Government has already decided to establish model schools in all the districts, he appealed to media persons to visit model schools already established and report infrastructure shortage, if any.

Works taken up for night landing at Tulihal Airport have been finished.

Due file process is being made in the Civil Aviation Ministry to commission the newly installed and upgraded infrastructure which would add night landing facility to Imphal airport, he said.
