Imphal, October 18 2008:
Observing that the indefinite general strike being called by the evicted street vendors from tomorrow morning is unreasonable and unjustifiable, Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Semgat Sagatpa Lup and Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Sinpham Amandi Shaktam Kanba Lup have announced that the strike would not be supported and there would be normal business transaction in the market as usual.
In separate statements but with same contents, secretary of Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Semgat Sagatpa Lup P Ibenu Devi and secretary of Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Sinpham Amadi Saktam Kanba Lup Kh Rani Devi said that decision to call the general strike by the street vendors for not allowing them to sell their goods from along the road sides of congested Imphal city where thousands of people are commuting every day is unreasonable.
Moreover, keeping aside the age old tradition of barter system, the demand for providing plots to every person coming to Khwairamband Market from different parts of the State does not much make sense and undermines the purpose and objective of market sheds constructed in every district.
Moreover, squatting in the roadside to trade goods deters free movement, the statements said.
